About the book: Sevasadan
Sevasadan is a Hindustani novel written by Premchand. It was originally written in Urdu under the title Bazaar-e-Husn, which translates to Market of Beauty or red-light district. It was first published in Hindi from Calcutta as Seva Sadan in 1919, making it the first novel published by Premchand. Later, it was published in Urdu from Lahore in 1924, and an English translation was released in 2005.
The novel tells the tale of an unhappy housewife named Suman, who is a Brahmin lady married into a loveless union due to family obligations. She leaves this marriage and is beguiled away from domestic virtue to become a courtesan in the kothas of Varanasi. Later, she reforms herself and atones by serving as the manager and a teacher in an orphanage for the young daughters of courtesans. The Urdu title highlights the fall of the heroine, while the Hindi title highlights her redemption and the house of service.
Vasudha Dalmia wrote an introduction to the English translation of the novel, detailing the context in which it is set. She pointed out that the title itself suggests the many layered social texture of Varanasi.
