About Sevasadan
Sevasadan — meaning House of Service — was Munshi Premchand's first major Hindi novel and the work that established his reputation. Suman, a young woman from a respectable family, finds herself in an impossible situation: forced by poverty and a failed marriage into a world of social ostracism. She ultimately finds a path back through social service, establishing a sevasadan — a refuge for women in distress.
Premchand wrote Sevasadan as a response to the social reform debates of his time, particularly around the treatment of widows and women outside the protection of marriage. The novel is less pessimistic than his later work — it holds out genuine hope for social transformation through collective action and individual courage. It is also beautifully written, with a warmth and moral clarity that makes it one of the most accessible entry points to Premchand's world.
