The Cherry Orchard, first performed in 1904, was Chekhov's final play and one of the greatest works in the history of theatre. An aristocratic Russian family returns to their beloved country estate — famous for its magnificent cherry orchard — only to find they are deeply in debt and must sell everything, including the orchard itself. The family dithers, reminisces, and argues, unable to act. The orchard is sold. Chekhov described it as a comedy; his director Stanislavski staged it as a tragedy. It is both.
