Die Leiden des jungen Werthers

Goethe's Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther, 1774) is a revolutionary work that transformed German literature and shook all of Europe. Written as an epistolary novel — a collection of letters and diary entries — it tells the story of Werther, a sensitive young man who falls hopelessly in love with Lotte, who is already engaged to another man.

Goethe wrote this novel at age 24, immediately after his own unrequited love for Charlotte Buff. Werther was not literature in the classical sense — it was therapeutic catharsis and artistic revolution at the same time. The novel was born during the Sturm und Drang movement, the rebellion against Enlightenment rationality. Goethe placed feeling, passion, and nature as the highest values.

Werther is consumed by absolute, devouring love for Lotte. He cannot accept that Lotte belongs to her fiancé Albert. His obsessive despair becomes increasingly pathological.
