Benito Perez Galdos's Dona Perfecta (1876) is a powerful drama of religious intolerance and political conflict in provincial Spain. A young, progressive engineer from Madrid travels to his aunt's town, hoping to marry his cousin — only to be destroyed by the rigid, fanatical forces of tradition embodied in the saintly but ruthless Dona Perfecta. A devastating portrait of the two Spains in conflict. Stream free in Spanish.
About the book: Dona Perfecta
Doña Perfecta was published in 1876 by Benito Pérez Galdós. It belongs to what is called the first of Galdós's three epochs in his novels of social analysis.
The story is set in 19th-century Spain. A young liberal named Don José, or Pepe, Rey arrives in a cathedral city named Orbajosa to marry his cousin Rosario. Their marriage of convenience was arranged by Pepe's father Juan and Juan's sister, Perfecta. After Pepe and Rosario declare their eternal love, Don Inocencio, the cathedral canon, meddles and obstructs the marriage. Several events lead to a confrontation between Pepe Rey and his aunt Perfecta because she refuses to allow the marriage due to Pepe being a non-believer. The novel illustrates the great power that the church wielded, and describes the differences between the traditional, provincial outlook, and the modern, liberal outlook of Madrid, the capital.
A notable detail connected to the book is that the confrontation between Pepe Rey and his aunt Perfecta was supposedly based on Galdós's difficult relationship with his mother.
