About the book: Le Fantome de l'Opera
Written by French author Gaston Leroux, the Gothic horror novel was first published as a serial in Le Gaulois from 23 September 1909 to 8 January 1910. It was subsequently released in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte.
The story is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century, along with rumours of a ghost in the opera house. It matters as a notable work of Gothic horror and romance that has been successfully adapted into various stage and film productions.
Before writing his famous novels, the author spent his inheritance gambling after initially planning to become a lawyer, which eventually led him to work as a reporter for L'Écho de Paris.
