by August Strindberg
Swedish • Public Domain • Free to stream
A satirical portrait of Stockholm bohemian life — journalism, art and corruption in 1870s Sweden. The novel that launched modern Swedish literature.
About the book: Röda rummet
August Strindberg wrote his novel from February to November 1879, reflecting on his own experiences of living in poverty. It was first published in 1879, and as a result, the author became famous throughout Scandinavia. While receiving mixed reviews in Sweden, it was acclaimed in Denmark, where Strindberg was hailed as a genius.
A satire of Stockholm society, the work is frequently described as the first modern Swedish novel. It follows a young idealistic civil servant, Arvid Falk, who leaves the drudgery of bureaucracy to become a journalist and author. As he explores various social activities, he finds more hypocrisy and political corruption than he thought possible, taking refuge with a group of bohemians who meet in a red dining room.
Edvard Brandes wrote that the novel makes the reader want to join the fight against hypocrisy and reaction. The book was adapted into a comic book by Per Demervall.
