These earliest short stories featuring the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes had previously been published in twelve monthly issues of The Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. The book had an initial print run of 10,000 copies in the United Kingdom, and a further 4,500 copies in the United States, which were published by Harper Brothers the following day.
The stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes generally identify and try to correct social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice.
