Written after the author returned from an ill-fated tour of America, it is loosely based on his own impoverished life before his breakthrough.
The novel is set in late 19th-century Kristiania, which is now known as Oslo. It recounts the adventures of a starving young man who wanders the streets in pursuit of nourishment while his sense of reality gives way to a delusionary existence. The book portrays the irrationality of the human mind in an intriguing and sometimes humorous manner, and it has been hailed as the literary opening of the 20th century, serving as an outstanding example of modern, psychology-driven literature.
The novel is loosely based on the author's own impoverished life before his breakthrough in 1890. Hamsun made revisions to the text in subsequent editions in 1899, 1907 and 1916.
