About the book: Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel written by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, who published under the name L. M. Montgomery. In writing the novel, Montgomery drew upon her childhood experiences in rural Prince Edward Island, Canada, and was inspired by notes she had made as a young girl about two siblings who were mistakenly sent an orphan girl instead of the boy they had requested.
Set in the late 19th century, the novel recounts the adventures of an 11-year-old orphan girl named Anne Shirley, who is sent by mistake to middle-aged siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. The Cuthberts had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea. The book follows Anne as she makes her way through life with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town, addressing struggles and joys in her first real home.
Montgomery used a photograph of Evelyn Nesbit, which she had clipped from a magazine and put on the wall of her bedroom, as the model for the face of Anne Shirley and as a reminder of her youthful idealism and spirituality. The book has since been translated into at least 36 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
