The story concerns Anne Elliot, a 27-year-old Englishwoman whose family moves to Bath to lower their expenses and reduce their debt by renting their estate to an admiral and his wife. Eight years before, Anne and the wife's brother, Captain Frederick Wentworth, had been engaged, but Anne had been persuaded by her friends and family to break the engagement. Now Anne and Captain Wentworth meet again, setting the scene for the story. Scholars consider Anne Elliot Austen's most mature heroine and the novel her most refined literary work.
