About the book: Inferno
Inferno is the first part of the Italian writer Dante Alighieri's narrative poem the Divine Comedy, followed by Purgatorio and Paradiso. Dante had most likely begun work on the Comedy around 1306, and Dante spent nearly all of the last years of his life focused on the Comedy. While the complete Comedy was likely not published until after Dante's death, Inferno circulated in fragments and excerpts for years prior.
The Inferno describes the journey of a fictionalised version of Dante himself through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torment located within the Earth. As an allegory, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin.
Dante was exiled from Florence after his political faction, the pro-empire White Guelphs, were defeated by the pro-Papal Black Guelphs.
