Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy (c.1308-1320) is the supreme masterpiece of Italian literature and one of the greatest works in all of human culture. In three books — Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso — Dante journeys through the realms of the afterlife guided first by the poet Virgil, then by his beloved Beatrice. By turns terrifying, tender, and transcendent, it is the foundation of the Italian language itself. Stream free in native Italian.
About the book: La Divina Commedia
The narrative poem was begun around 1308 and completed around 1321, shortly before the author's death. The first printed edition was published in 1472, and the work was originally titled Comedia, later adjusted to Commedia.
The poem explores the condition of the soul following death and portrays a vision of divine justice, in which individuals receive appropriate punishment or reward based on their actions. It describes travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, representing the soul's journey towards God. It helped establish the Tuscan language as the standardized Italian language and is representative of the medieval worldview.
The author was among the White Guelphs who were exiled in 1302 by the Lord-Mayor Cante de' Gabrielli di Gubbio, after troops under Charles of Valois entered the city at the request of Pope Boniface VIII.
