About the book: The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher
The origin of the book lies in a letter Beatrix Potter wrote to a child in 1893 while summering on the River Tay. She revised the story and published it in July 1906 through Frederick Warne and Company, changing the setting to the English Lake District. The tale reflects her love for the region and her admiration for illustrator Randolph Caldecott.
The story follows Jeremy Fisher, a frog living in a damp house at the edge of a pond, who sets off in a lily-pad boat on a rainy day to catch minnows for a dinner party. He encounters various setbacks and narrowly escapes being swallowed by a large trout before swimming ashore and deciding never to fish again. The book matters because it presents truthful illustrations of nature and showcases Potter's skill as both a naturalist and a fantasist.
Potter wanted to write a frog story because it was amusing and offered opportunities for naturalist illustrations.
