About the book: The Tale of Two Bad Mice
The Tale of Two Bad Mice was written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter, and published in September 1904. Potter took inspiration for the story from two mice caught in a cage-trap in her cousin's home and a doll's house being constructed by her editor and publisher as a Christmas gift for his niece. During the development of the tale, Potter and her editor fell in love and became engaged, despite the annoyance of her parents.
The book is about two mice who vandalise a doll's house after discovering that the food on the dining room table is made of plaster. They smash dishes, throw doll clothing out the window, and carry articles back to their mouse-hole, later atoning for their actions by placing a crooked sixpence in the doll's stocking and sweeping the house every morning. The story reflects Potter's growing satisfaction in her professional and personal life, as well as a response to middle-class domestic norms.
One interesting connection to the author is that Potter used a real pet mouse named Hunca Munca, who was rescued from a trap, as a model for the tale and praised her good housekeeping skills.
