The Wonderful Adventures of Nils
by Selma Lagerlöf
Swedish • Public Domain • Free to stream
A mischievous boy is shrunk to thumb-size and flies across Sweden on the back of a wild goose. Lagerlöf's beloved classic — an English translation narrated in Swedish.
About the book: The Wonderful Adventures of Nils
The background for publication was a commission from the National Teachers Association to write a geography reader for public schools. The author devoted years to nature study, familiarising herself with animal and bird life, and seeking out unpublished folklore and legends of different provinces to weave into the story.
The book is about a young lad whose chief delight was to make mischief and hurt the animals on his family farm. After capturing a tomte, he is shrunken and gains the ability to talk with animals. He takes an adventurous trip across all the historical provinces of Sweden with wild geese and a domestic goose, observing natural characteristics and economic resources while learning to change for the better.
The author of the work was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Like many leading Swedish intellectuals of her time, she was an advocate of Swedish spelling reform, and this book was one of the first to adopt the new spelling mandated by a government resolution.
