Grimms' Fairy Tales, originally known as Children's and Household Tales, is a German collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm. Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano wanted to publish folk tales and asked the brothers to collect oral tales for publication. The brothers collected many old books and asked friends and acquaintances in Kassel to tell tales and to gather stories from others, seeking to collect these stories to write a history of old German literature and to preserve history. The first volume of the first edition was published on 20 December 1812, containing 86 stories, followed by a second volume in 1815.
The collection is considered the seminal work of Western children's literature and is listed by UNESCO in its Memory of the World Register. Over various editions, stories were added and removed until the corpus expanded significantly. Through the editions, changes were made to the text, such as removing sexual references and adapting certain characters, while violence, particularly when punishing villains, became more prevalent.
Before their international success with Jacob's German Grammar, the brothers' initial intention for their first book was to establish a name for themselves in the world.
