Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens is a novel written by J. M. Barrie and published by Hodder & Stoughton in late November or early December 1906. Most of the text originally appeared as chapters 13 to 18 of Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, which was published as a novel for adult readers. The separately published 1906 novel was released specifically as a children's book.
The story follows Peter, a seven-day-old infant who used to be part bird and escapes out of the window of his London home to return to Kensington Gardens. Because he cannot fly, he becomes stranded and navigates the Serpentine using a child-sized thrush's nest as a boat. He gains favour with the fairies, plays the panpipes at fairy dances, and later meets a lost little girl named Maimie Mannering. The book is one of four major literary works by Barrie featuring the widely known literary character he created, Peter Pan.
Scholar Jacqueline Rose perceives that the book is not so much a children's book as one for art collectors, thanks to the 1906 edition's illustrations by Arthur Rackham.
