About These Novels
Jane Austen published six novels between 1811 and 1817, three of them here. She wrote about a narrow world — a few families in a country village — and found everything in it. Pride and Prejudice (1813) is the one everybody knows; Emma (1815) is the funniest; Persuasion (1817), published after her death, is the one people come back to when they are older.
Charlotte Brontë wrote something rougher and stranger. Jane Eyre (1847) shocked its first readers by letting a poor, plain woman insist on her own worth. Shirley (1849) sets two women against the machine-breaking riots of 1812. Villette (1853) is her masterpiece and her least comfortable book, narrated by a woman who withholds the truth from the reader. The Professor, written first, was published only in 1857, after she had died.
